An Assessment session at Pure Pilates Ilkley is perhaps the most important hour you will spend at the studio, and the best investment you will make in any exercise or rehabilitation programme. Orthopaedic surgeons, doctors, midwives and physiotherapists these days may recommend you ‘do’ Pilates, but not all Pilates classes will be beneficial, taking into account any needs you may have.
Always ask a Pilates Teacher where, how and with what organisation they attained their Pilates training, regardless of your reasons for attending class. Please see our Training page for details of some UK and Internationally recognised Training & Accreditation Organisations.
The Private Pilates Assessment at Pure Pilates Ilkley, be it for the Matwork Studio or our Equipment Studio Classes, is vital for both yourself and all our teachers. Essentially it is the most important time you will spend at the studio. It is your time to discuss any injuries, illnesses and goals privately with the teacher prior to joining group classes. It is also a very vital part of our role as teachers. It is a time for us to assess any injuries and the effects of your health, work & general lifestyles on your posture and muscle balance, as, no matter how slight, they will play an enormous part in structuring your individual programme and classes at our studio. Assessment includes muscle flexibility, strength, range of motion, and motor control.
Tell them everything – even that niggle you get in your lower spine once in a while can be relevant and alter the regime they devise for you – even if you are an ex rugby player and have a list of previous injuries as long as your arm! If you are pregnant, there is advice on our Pilates page, but please consult your GP or midwife for information on what will be appropriate for you during your pregnancy.
And when in class:
You are responsible for your own body, learn to listen to and respect it. Your ability to perform Pilates exercises may vary from session to session depending on your state of well-being, fitness, tiredness and/or stress levels. Let us know of any changes in your health or physical state. Exercise should be performed at a pace that feels comfortable for you. PAIN is the body’s warning system and SHOULD NOT BE IGNORED. Pilates is not a ‘no pain, no gain’ exercise regimen.
All group classes in our Equipment Studio are mixed ability, everyone working to their own individual programme, based around their individual needs and goals. Don’t be surprised if you see some very advanced exercises being done by others but they are not necessarily appropriate for you, or simply you might just not be ready yet!
AND AFTER ALL THAT – JUST ENJOY!
A Pilates Class
A Group (Studio) Class in the Equipment Studios will have a maximum of 4 people. Classes tend to start with a basic warm up, and then you will move onto the specialist equipment. These classes are mixed ability, with everyone in the class working on the various equipment to their own individual programme of exercise, based around their specific ability, physical needs and personal goals. All Pure Pilates Ilkley teachers are experienced in ensuring that each and everyone receives the individual attention they need.
Assessments, Privates, Duet and Group Studio classes are held in either studio. The ground floor studios have disabled access.
We have up a second, full Equipment Studio on the ground floor suitable for Group, Duet and Private classes, similar to that in the upstairs Equipment Studio. The new equipment has been handmade to our own specifications by Purist Pilates of London and is Classical in origin.
Classical Matwork and Pilates Circuit classes are held in the large Matwork Room on the Ground floor.

Your Pilates Goal
“From my first session Kirstin has created individually tailored sessions, changing my previously more muscular physique to become leaner, stronger and more flexible, which in turn has greatly improved my posture. Kirstin is a highly skilled and experienced teacher who can clearly explain to even the beginner the purpose and correct positioning for each and every exercise.
I personally have been able to change the shape of my body reducing muscle bulk and therefore weight without any reduction in strength.”
Julie Braham, Ilkley
We in the Pilates world often quote this particular statement in all our literature, both paper and on the net but …………What did Joseph Pilates mean when he said.....?
“In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference and in 30 you will have a whole new body”
To clarify the circumstances and time in which he made this remark. He did claim he could totally change a body in 30 sessions. What he did mean was that in 30, intensive, one on one sessions with himself, plus a lot of daily homework, over a short intensive period of time (3 lessons a week as a minimum), this could be achieved.
What he did not mean was that this could be achieved in one hour per week over 30 weeks.
The more often you do Pilates, the more quickly and intensely you see and feel a difference in your body. The more you do anything, the more you learn and change.
This however does not mean that you cannot have a new body, control your chronic pain or whatever your Pilates goal is, you can, it just means that it may take a little longer, and involve regular daily homework. Many Pure Pilates clients have gained a great deal more mobility or relieved their chronic pain in a very short space of time, by rapidly improving their posture and targeting the supporting muscles of the back or joints responsible for the pain and weakness, and practising daily.
Equipment Studio Classes
Everyone attending an Equipment Studio Class works to their own specific individual programmes and goals, receiving personal attention and guidance from the instructor.
A Duo Class in the Equipment Studio follows the same pattern as a Studio Class, the only difference is that there are only 2 people in at the time. Each still works to their own specific programmes and goals. Duo classes must be booked at the same time and carry the same 48 hrs notice as Private Classes as the studio will be reserved just for the two sharing.
Much the same as the Studio and Duo Classes, in a Private session the client is working to their own specific programme and goals, with the undivided attention of the instructor. These can be in either the upper Equipment Studio or in the studio on the ground floor.
The variety of equipment in both equipment studios means that all ability levels and goals can be catered for. See our equipment page for more information on the different pieces of specialist Pilates equipment we have in the studios.
Matwork & Pilates Circuit Classes
There is a large repertoire of Classical Pilates exercises which are generally taught on the mat using only your own body for resistance.
A variety of small equipment can be utilised at times in Matwork classes; stability rolls, resistance bands, release balls, massage balls, triangles and magic cushions which may aid and/or challenge.
Pilates Circuit Classes may utilise some or all of the smaller equipment.
Class and Pass Prices
Everyone must have an Assessment prior to starting classes, no matter what your experience is, as this is your time to discuss privately any issues you may have and what you want from your time in the studio. A full postural assessment will be done and a programme of exercise can then be designed specifically for your individual needs and goals.
For classes in the Equipment Studios a full hour is needed and is priced at £50.00. For Matwork classes a 30 minute private session can be arranged at a cost of £25.00.
Should you wish to join a Classical Matwork or Circuit Class and have any physical issues, it may be advisable to book a full hour for your assessment as some of the exercises may not be appropriate for you. The teacher who does your assessment will advise you on this.
Below you will find our Price List for classes, but please feel free to give us a call to discuss what you want or need from your Pilates practice or can't find the answer on our FAQ page.
